How Do Windmills Generate Electricity?

Submitted on October 27, 2009 No Comment

As a child, one of the most prominent landmarks I can remember is the Dutch windmills. Every time someone would mention Holland to me, all that comes into my mind are these huge buildings with a large cross-like propeller. I thought that it was just one large electric fan that cools down the hot Dutch summers. Later on, I learned that the windmill is one contraption that can mill wheat into flour through the power of the wind. Such a great innovation!

Windmills

Nowadays, windmills are already given a new, contemporary design, and more than that, a significant power. Modern windmills do not just produce the needed mechanical energy – they have become the source of electricity.

The windmills I mention here are those white structures resembling drinking straws with three-thronged propellers spread across a vast, windy field, and these provide energy for massive consumption. But, thinking on a small-scale basis, can we actually own a personal windmill in our homes, capable of generating power for our basic domestic necessities?

I’ve seen such homes on TV when I was young, and at that time, windmill-powered domiciles are oddities. But now, with the energy crisis the world is experiencing, as well as the skyrocketing bills that keep on piling on our mailbox, this alternative source of energy becomes a pleasant, common want.

But what really makes the windmill a clever alternative energy source?

A windmill can convert mechanical energy into electric energy. Its propellers harness a very abundant and free source of power – the wind. More importantly, a windmill should have a strong turbine that serves as the transformer of this mechanical energy into electricity.

Because of this, windmills are highly recommended for use at homes located in windy areas.

Windmills

Building this contraption is not a million-dollar endeavor. After all, you’ll just have to produce extra energy for your home, and not for your whole neighborhood. In fact, with just around $200, you can already purchase all the needed materials in your hardware in order to build a windmill for your home.

Assembling is it never a hassle too. The internet provides various sites that may assist you in designing and constructing your own windmill. Video guides, tutorials, and modules shall be your online tools. Moreover, the mechanical tools that you have to use can be found simply in your garage. Lastly, assembling this would just take you a day. If that’s not convenience, then what is it?

Just imagine. Once you’ve constructed your own windmill, you can utilize a strong gale or a storm, and gather much electricity to light and heat up your home. I could just imagine the smile on your face once you see a surprisingly depleted energy bill.
